Should Salou sleep during the winter months.

Reus airport may not be the biggest tourist aiport, but it is the main airport serving the Costa Dorada resorts of Salou, Cambrils and La Pineda and also the PortAventura theme park.

The arrival of low cost airline Ryanair to Reus saw a revival of passenger numbers at the airport and has helped these smallish resorts to flourish over the last few year. This year being a particularly difficult year for Spanish tourism has seen the resorts hit pretty hard with numbers down. The poor euro exchange and also the rise in air fares has had its toll.

With the main season lasting from mid May till Mid October, Salou cannot be called an all-year round resort. True it does have mild winters and a good deal of winter sunshine. The PortAventura theme park goes some way to  keeping the resorts going with Halloween and Christmas festivities. But in reality the resort of Salou becomes its own special halloween ghost town, when almost everything shuts up shop till next year. On a busy year some establishments may push their season a little longer but on a poor year, there does seem little point.

This year also sees a great many winter flights from Ryanair dissapear of the schedule, which can only add to the hardship and make sure Salou stays quiet through the winter months.

Should more be done? should the businesses of Salou stay open longer and stretch the season?

Myself I think the out of season time is a great time to explore Salou and the surrounding area, some nice warm sunshine, no crowds, and when you do find somewhere to eat and drink, the quality does seem to be that much better. Whether Salou should be an all-year round resort I think will lay with what can it offer, and in reality it can offer quite a lot.

Family Holidays to Spain

Many families look to their first holiday abroad with children with certain trepidation, and with good reason. Long flights, tired children, strange food, airport queues and hot sunshine can easily speall disaster.

With careful choice of destination and a little planning there is no reason why a family with young children cannot enjoy a holiday in the sun.

Salou is a resort in the Costa Dorada (Golden Coast) region of Spain. A resort that fits especially well with families and children of ALL ages.

With a short flight time from the UK to (Reus Airport) Salou of about one and a half hours, and a transfer time to the resort of about 15 minutes by taxi, this cuts down the amount of travelling time usually assocaited with holidays abroad and makes a good way of testing the water.

Once in the resort itself, you will be presented with glorious sandy beaches that are cleaned daily and shelving gently into the Mediterranean sea making safe, fun bathing. All along the beach itself are many facilities for refreshments with the usual ice-creams, drinks and snack food.

Also along the beach are many play areas, slides, swings, climbing frames which the children seem to make good use of.

The palm tree lined promenade has a very wide walkway shielded from the main roads making it very easy to get around the resort.

Salou has the usual mix of cafes and restaraunts and bar serving every type of food and most the usual English food and good childrens menus.

A visit to Salou is not complete without a trip to the PortAventura theme park which is a few minutes bus / taxi ride from the resort. PortAventura is for everyone not just the kids!, the theme park has rides and shows of all types, from white knuckle roller coasters to gentle scenic railways. CLICK HERE FOR DISCOUNT TICKETS

Public transport around the resort runs between Salou, Cambrils and La Pineda every few minutes and cost just a few euro's.

For a break from Salou, hop of the bus (or take a boat trip) to Cambrils, a more relaxing fishing port a few miles along the coast from Salou and with a much gentler pace. Cambrils has a lovely marina and some of the best restaraunts around, especially for sea food. There is also a nice park with play areas for different aged children.

DIY Holidays

With Christmas out of the way and the wintry weather arriving it is obvious that people start to think of warmer climates and the all important break away. How many people will head to the travel agents and how many will be surfing the net for their holiday bargain.

DIY holidays have taken off with more and more people searching out their own accommodation and flights and tailoring their own holiday to how they want it and saving themselves money too.

There will always be people that just do not want to do the internet thing and prefer to hand over their budget to the travel agent and let them find the holiday for them.

Some five years ago I booked a holiday through the travel agent with one of the package tour biggies, and got what I thougth was a bargain paying out just over a £1000 for 4 people.

The next year I did it myself, with the likes of Ryanair and Alpha Rooms, the price for flights and apartment coming in at around £280, yes I still had to get my own transfer, which was by taxi costing me another £20 each way, a taxi that was quick and where I did not have to travel
round a bunch of other hotels before I got to mine.

Many people seem a little scared of venturing into the DIY holiday but in reality it is a simple process and gives you a lot more flexibility. The money saved can also go towards enjoying your holiday that little bit more or even give you enough to have a couple of breaks away in the
sun instead of one.

My own steps to finding a break start with the flights, usually with Ryanair, their website has a good page where you can find the cheapest flights, the more flixible you can be the better.

1. Searching for flights, Luton to Reus (Salou) for a short break, in April, out on 19th April and Back on 22nd April, total for two people £62.38.

2. Next accommodation, entering the dates into the Alpha Rooms search, choose Salou as destination. Half board at the Hotel Caspel for a cost of £94.32

3. Oh those transfers +£40

4. Total cost for 3 night break £196.70

I could also use the airport bus service to transfer, save myself anouth £25 and spend it on a slap up meal in Cambrils.

**Searches correct at 13:20pm 3rd January 2008.
