Whats in store for PortAventura in 2010

So what does 2010 hold for PortAventura, first and foremost it is a big happy birthday to PortAventura which celebrates its 15th birthday.

Set to open its doors on 26th March for the 2010 season it will time to experience the PortAventura magic, the white knuckle coasters and rides and the fabulous shows, the 2010 season is set to end on 9th January 2011.

A few changes this year, with the Hotel PortAventura undergoing a name change and now known at the Hotel Villa MediterrĂ¡nea.

The Hotel El Paso will offer an All-inclusive option for 2010 with lunch and dinner being able to be taken either in the hotel or in the PortAventura Park itself (subject to designated outlets and times). And snack and soft drinks included at the designated areas. A great way to help budget for your holiday.

The Costa Caribe Aquatic park, I believe this will also undergo a name change for the 2010 season becoming the PortAventura Aquatic Park, but I am still awaiting confirmation on this.
Great ticket offers are already available with a 14 days forthe price of 4 currently being promoted, you need to book before March 31st to take advantage of this great offer.

Of course PortAventura will also see itself transformed for Halloween and Christmas festivities.
One thing is for sure, it will be another great year at PortAventura as the park goes from strength to strength. get along to PortAventura in 2010 and help it celebrate its 15th birthday.

Should Salou sleep during the winter months.

Reus airport may not be the biggest tourist aiport, but it is the main airport serving the Costa Dorada resorts of Salou, Cambrils and La Pineda and also the PortAventura theme park.

The arrival of low cost airline Ryanair to Reus saw a revival of passenger numbers at the airport and has helped these smallish resorts to flourish over the last few year. This year being a particularly difficult year for Spanish tourism has seen the resorts hit pretty hard with numbers down. The poor euro exchange and also the rise in air fares has had its toll.

With the main season lasting from mid May till Mid October, Salou cannot be called an all-year round resort. True it does have mild winters and a good deal of winter sunshine. The PortAventura theme park goes some way to  keeping the resorts going with Halloween and Christmas festivities. But in reality the resort of Salou becomes its own special halloween ghost town, when almost everything shuts up shop till next year. On a busy year some establishments may push their season a little longer but on a poor year, there does seem little point.

This year also sees a great many winter flights from Ryanair dissapear of the schedule, which can only add to the hardship and make sure Salou stays quiet through the winter months.

Should more be done? should the businesses of Salou stay open longer and stretch the season?

Myself I think the out of season time is a great time to explore Salou and the surrounding area, some nice warm sunshine, no crowds, and when you do find somewhere to eat and drink, the quality does seem to be that much better. Whether Salou should be an all-year round resort I think will lay with what can it offer, and in reality it can offer quite a lot.

Salou, Cambrils and La Pineda out of season

There is no denying it that come mid October the tourist areas of Salou, Cambrils and La Pineda begin to close, by the end of October it is quiet. But what makes a gorgeous site is the deserted beaches , the golden sand and warm sunshine.

The picture above is from early March in Salou, I myself was expecting grey cloud, drizzle and a chilling wind. What I was welcomed with was warm sunshine and the beach to ourselves.

It is true there was not a lot open, but enough bars and cafes to keep me fed and watered. We stayed at the Hotel Caspel and this proved great, with good food, bar and a nice indoor pool.

It is also worth noting the PortAventura theme park is open out of season with themes for both Halloween and Christmas, after Christmas the park closes until late March.

It may not be for everyone and children especially may find the resorts a little boring, but our 7 year old found plenty to do, including plenty of football on the beach with some locals.

The bars and cafes we did find open were found to be very friendly and most welcoming which is probably why so many cold beers and hot cappucinos were consumed on our stay.

When the weather is nice it is great to explore the local countryside and hiring a car could prove useful and one thing for sure it will be easier to park than it is in August.
